Sandford

The first Sandford that we have information for is Matthew Sandford who was born July 21, 1813 in Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Scotland, parents, James Sandford and Mary Ann Duff.  He was christened on September 5, 1813 in the same parish.  James Sandford was also named as the father of a Janet Sandford who was born October 12, 1813, also in Whithorn Parish and christened January 9, 1814, her mother’s name Janet Patterson.  Although Sandford was a rare name in Wigtownshire, at first I thought that it might be a different James Sandford.  However, when this Janet Sandford (married name McClelland) died in 1867, Matthew Sandford was the informant, and his relationship was shown as brother.  The christening records for Matthew and Janet listed each of them as “natural child of” which means they were both illegitimate.  I haven’t been able to find a marriage entry for James Sandford to either Mary Ann Duff or Janet Paterson, so I’m not sure if he married either one.  Neither James nor Mary Ann appear on any census records.

A person doing research in Wigtownshire contacted me about her ancestors - she had a Mary Ann Duff who married William Hood in Whithorn.  She was of the opinion that it was the same Mary Ann Duff who was Matthew’s mother.  She based this in part on the fact that after Mary Ann (Duff) Hood died (late 1820s), William Hood had remarried on the same day and in the same parish that Matthew Sandford had married his 1st wife, Anne Cally.  Unfortunately, we may never really know anything about James Sandford and Mary Ann Duff.

There is another possible sister for Matthew Sandford - Margaret Paterson Sandford, daughter of Janet Paterson.  I haven’t found a christening for Margaret, but came across her gravestone in Glasserton Parish Cemetery and the name Sandford struck me as odd since our Sandford’s were the only ones I had found in Whithorn and Glasserton since the early 1800s.  This Margaret was born just a few years after Matthew and Janet, and although her gravestone shows her maiden name as Sandford, all of her children’s christening records and her husband’s death registration list her m.s. as Sandford, her death registration does not list a father, just her mother as Janet Paterson.  On the 1841 census lists she is listed under Paterson and later census records indicate she was born in Whithorn Parish.  I find it hard to believe that Janet Paterson had a second child with a different Sandford, but you never know.  More investigation required - check the Whithorn parish registers again to see if there are any references.
